AlwaysFree: China’s Shanghai, Ningbo Ports Resume Operations After Typhoon Chanthu

Author: SSESSMENTS

The Chinese ports of Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan had begun handling containers again at its terminals as of Tuesday after suspending operations briefly due to Typhoon Chanthu. Shanghai authorities also said that fights and rail services had gradually started returning to normal on Tuesday. China’s National Meteorological Centre downgraded Chanthu from a strong typhoon to a typhoon by Wednesday morning. However, strong wind and heavy rains are expected to persist in the meantime.

However, analysts said that the brief disruption in Shanghai and Ningbo could have far-reaching implications in the global shipping market. Industry sources expect further delays in the lead-up to the year-end holiday shopping season. Ship-tracking data showed 86 container ships were at anchor off the two ports as of Friday ahead of the suspension on Monday. A consultancy firm said the recent disruption affected exports of clothing and office equipment the most.
