AlwaysFree: Chinese Provinces to Lead Carbon Emission Assessments

Author: SSESSMENTS

Seven Chinese provinces will lead the assessments on carbon emissions, a program from the country’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE).

The pilot provinces are Hebei, Jilin, Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Shandong, and Chongqing. The local governments are required to come up with a methodology to assess the carbon emissions of such projects by the end of the year also to extend the assessment to other industrial sectors based on their respective climate action plans.

Provinces that are at risk of higher pollution problems may also include assessments for methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbon, sulfur hexafluoride, nitrogen trifluoride, and other greenhouse gases.

The program is a part of China’s effort to hit carbon neutrality by 2060. It also aims for its emissions to peak by 2030.

This month, the government has also launched its national emission trading scheme. In the first six months of 2021, the government had received CNY4.3 billion (USD662 million) worth of fines for environmental violations.
