AlwaysFree: CNPC Cut Methane Emission Intensity in 2020

Author: SSESSMENTS

In 2020, China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC) cut its methane emission intensity by 6% year-on-year as a part of its pledge to deepen the methane emission intensity by 50% by 2025 from a 2019 baseline.

The company has been optimizing the energy structure, developing clean energy, and increasing methane recycle and utilization. It has commenced out measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) of greenhouse gas.

CNPC aims for near-zero emissions by 2050, a decade earlier than China’s carbon neutrality target of 2060. The company is part of an alliance aiming to slash the average methane emission intensity during natural gas production to below 0.25% by 2025.

Last year’s natural gas output was boosted to more than 50% of CNPC’s energy production portfolio, for the first time in 2020. It was in line with Beijing’s aim to slash coal burning and spur clean energy consumption including natural gas.
