AlwaysFree: Eneos Assessing Building Hydrogen Supply Chain

Author: SSESSMENTS

Japanese refiner Eneos will assess hydrogen supply chains to anticipate a significant increase in hydrogen demand as the country edges up towards a net-zero carbon society and the fall of oil products’ demand.

The company will utilize its refineries and existing infrastructure in the research using methylcyclohexane (MCH). The study will be completed at the end of March 2023.

The company’s project in Kawasaki in the Tokyo-bay area targets to supply carbon dioxide (CO2)-free hydrogen through existing pipelines.

Another study in Mutsu Ogawara aims to produce CO2-free hydrogen using electricity generated from renewable sources at nearby plants. The hydrogen will be transformed to MCH, and the MCH will then be delivered to refineries and power plants in the Tohoku area of northern Japan. Eneos is also deliberating the storage of MCH in the region's tanks.

Eneos has targeted to reach carbon neutrality by 2040 by expanding its power generation capacity which is sourced from renewable energy such as solar and wind power to above 1,000MW.
