AlwaysFree: EU Countries to Get National Renewable Energy Expansion Targets

Author: SSESSMENTS

The EU is proposing for each country to get national targets on expanding renewable energy to support the bloc’s goal to cut emissions.

On Wednesday, Diederik Samsom, head of the European Commission climate chief's cabinet, said that a major package of climate change policies is being drafted to set binding national targets for the EU’s 27 countries to raise the consumption of renewable energies including wind and solar.

National targets could address the imbalance of the share of renewable energy across the country members. The new individual targets could also be easier to agree with now that many countries are planning a huge expansion of renewable power.

The draft is scheduled to be unveiled in July and it would put the region set on its new climate target while also mark a return to the system that was in place until 2020.

Currently, the EU is targeting to have 32% of its energy sources coming from renewables by 2030. In comparison, in 2019 the region used 20% of renewables. The economy-wide net emissions will be slashed by at least 55% of its 1990 levels by 2030.
