AlwaysFree: INEOS Styrolution, Trinseo, Recycling Technologies, Cooperate To Build PS Recycling Plants

Author: SSESSMENTS

INEOS Styrolution, Trinseo, Recycling Technologies have reached an agreement to build commercial-scale polystyrene (PS) recycling plants in Europe. Under the deal, Recycling Technologies will provide the technology to depolymerise PS waste into its chemical building blocks, which will be polymerised again to produce recycled PS with identical properties with virgin PS. According to life cycle assessment calculations, recycling PS emits markedly lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to producing PS from naphtha.

Recycling Technologies’ fluidised bed reactor has the highest yields in converting PS waste into styrene monomers. The three companies will first build a pilot plant in the UK in 2022 before developing the technology further into a commercial scale. The pilot plant will provide data regarding PS chemical recycling that will help the companies to scale up the operations. INEOS Styrolution plans to build its PS recycling plant in Wingles, France, while Trinseo will have its own plant in Tessenderlo, Belgium. These plants will have an individual capacity to process 15,000 tons/year of PS waste and are expected to start up in 2023.
