AlwaysFree: Japan’s FY19-20 Energy Consumption Fell

In the fiscal year 2019-2020, Japan’s energy consumption continued to fall on account of the fall of demand from all sectors.

According to the preliminary data by the trade and industry ministry (Meti), the final energy consumption went down by 2% year-on-year totaled about 335 million kl or 2.1 boe.

Coal consumption dropped by 2% year-on-year to 213 million boe, oil use dropped by 2.5% to 1 billion boe. Power demand slumped by 1.9% to 542 million boe, while renewable energy use declined by 6% to 1.9mn boe. Requirements for natural gas and city gas dropped by 0.4% to 184 million boe.

The fall in consumption in the household sector was attributed to the warmer winter, while in the industry sector, mainly from the steel and petrochemical sectors, plunged.

The country’s primary energy supply slumped by 3.1% year-on-year to 3.1 billion boe. Fossil fuel supplies decelerated for the sixth consecutive year. On the contrary, the non-fossil fuel supplies climbed for the seventh year in a row.

The fossil fuel shares plunged to the lowest level since FY2011-2012 by 85% while the non-fossil energy sources’ share rose by 24.2%, up by 1.2% on a yearly basis.

In the latest fiscal year, power output totalled 1 billion MWh, down by 2.2% year-on-year. 

The energy-derived CO2 emissions fell for the sixth straight year, by 3.4% year-on-year to 1.03 billion tons. It was a drop of 16.7% compared to the FY2013-2014. The CO2 emissions from the power sector slid down by 2.6% year-on-year to 0.474 kg/kWh, which was an 18% slump from FY2013-2014.
