AlwaysFree: NextDecade Enters Responsibly-Sourced Gas Effort

Author: SSESSMENTS

NextDecade enters a responsibly-sourced gas effort by having the assessments of its greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of liquefied natural gas (LNG) produced at its proposed liquefaction terminal in Texas under a partnership with Project Canary.

European buyers are under pressure by the strict carbon emissions goals for importing US shale gas, therefore some North American terminal developers have been designing energy transition-supportive shale gas able to be utilized in cleaner-burning fuels and aid rather than impede buyers climate goals.

Under the pilot partnership, NextDecade will involve monitoring, reporting, and independent third-party measurement and certification of the GHG intensity of LNG to be sold from Rio Grande LNG. Among its aims is to enable the development of responsibly sourced natural gas from producers in the Permian Basin and Eagle Ford shale that will be fed to the export terminal.

The final investment decision (FID) is targeted for later in 2021. However, according to Romer, the work will start right away and give transparency about Rio Grande LNG’s environmental stewardship.

NextDecade is expected to be able to bring buyers back to the table with its aggressive GHG cut and certification efforts.
