AlwaysFree: Renewables Surpass Fossil Fuel In EU Electricity Mix: Survey

Author: SSESSMENTS

A survey by think tanks Agora Energiewende and Ember found that renewable sources accounted for 38% of electricity generated in the EU’s 27 member states in 2020, surpassing fossil fuels’ share of 37%. Denmark had the highest renewable share of 61% of its electricity, followed by Ireland (35%) and Germany (33%). Meanwhile, Slovakia and the Czech Republic had the lowest renewable share at below 5%.

The report also found that EU electricity demand fell 4% last year, driven by measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. It also noted that fossil fuel power generation saw the most significant impact. EU’s coal-fired power generation dropped 20%, with all member states experiencing a fall in coal power generation. Coal power plants were less economical to run during weak demand compared to cheaper renewable generation.
