AlwaysFree: Renewed Virus Fear Dampens Australia Consumer Confidence

Author: SSESSMENTS

Australian household sentiment decreased in December amid concerns about the new coronavirus Omicron variant. Australia’s consumer confidence index fell 1% to 104.3 points this month, according to Westpac Banking Corp. However, the index stayed above the 100-point threshold, indicating that optimists still outweighed pessimists.

The Delta variant prompted stay-at-home orders in New South Wales and Victoria, which contributed to the contraction in Australia’s economy. The two states started easing restrictions in October after reaching vaccination targets. However, there are now renewed concerns about the newly emerging Omicron strain. New South Wales reported a surge in infections this week connected with the omicron variant.
