AlwaysFree: Repsol to Invest in Low-Emission Projects in Spain

Author: SSESSMENTS

As a part of its measures to decrease its carbon emissions, Spanish oil and gas major Repsol will invest EUR80 million (USD90 million) to establish two new plants in Spain’s Bilbao.

The first plant announced on Monday will be one of the biggest net-zero emission fuel facilities in the world. It will be based on green hydrogen generated with renewable energy and carbon dioxide captured at the Petronor refinery.

It will produce 50 bpd of synthetic fuel produced from hydrogen and CO2. The production will be experimental and expandable based on the results.

The second plant will generate gas from urban waste, replacing some of the traditional fuels used by the Petronor refinery. It will process 10,000 tpa of urban waste, with an expandable capacity to 100,000 tpa, or all the urban waste produced in the area.

Repsol is planning to cut its carbon emissions to a net-zero by 2050 by investing in technology that can store carbon, or in natural sinks such as forests. The company targets to reach at least 70% of its goal using technology that was already developed or nearly mature.

Following that, it will implement carbon capture, use and storage to raise that figure, and turn to natural sinks if necessary.
