AlwaysFree: Alaska LNG Passes Major Permitting Milestone

Author: SSESSMENTS

Despite some significant adverse environmental impacts, a US energy regulatory report for Alaska Gasline Development Corp’s proposed Alaska LNG project found it would provide economic benefits to the state.

Most environmental impacts would be reduced to less than significant levels with the implementation of proposed or recommended measures, staff at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) concluded in the final environmental impact statement (EIS). However, some impacts would be significant and adverse.

To build and operate the project, the EIS is a mandatory step toward gaining federal approval. For natural gas export, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is the federal agency responsible for authorizing onshore LNG facilities.

To help advance the development of the project, agreements have been signed by Alaska Gasline with BP PLC and Exxon Mobil Corp. Massive amounts of oil produced by BP and Exxon Mobil in Alaska.  Huge gas resources stranded on the North Slope have been discovered by BP and Exxon Mobil. The project would enable that gas to access markets around the world.
