AlwaysFree: BASF, Trinseo Work Together On Circular Styrene Production

Author: SSESSMENTS

BASF and Trinseo announced that they would work together to expand the production of circular feedstock-based styrene. Trinseo will produce styrene-butadiene rubber (S-SBR) and polystyrene (PS) products using BASF’s synthetic chemical styrene based on circular feedstock. BASF utilizes a mass balance approach to produce circular feedstock-based styrene. The method allows BASF to produce styrene from renewable feedstocks or chemically recycled feedstock.

Renewable pyrolysis oil derived from vegetable oils or organic waste replaces natural gas or naphtha in the production of BASF’s circular styrene. With this approach Trinseo and BASF can offer styrene with a better environmental profile and similar properties to fossil-based materials. An independent auditor has certified the products and the production process using the mass balance approach
