AlwaysFree: Chevron - 5 Things to Know From the Corporate Sustainability Report

Author: SSESSMENTS

According to the company’s website news release on May 4, 2023, Chevron’s 2022 Corporate Sustainability Report marks the 20th year of consistent, transparent reporting on our company’s efforts to protect the environment, empower our people and get results the right way. This report details our approach to help deliver affordable, reliable and ever-cleaner energy to a growing world.

“Our commitment to operating safely, responsibly and with integrity is at the core of who we are. We are always striving to improve our performance, and this powers our work to deliver lower carbon energy to a growing world.” Balaji Krishnamurthy, Vice President of Strategy and Sustainability

Here are 5 takeaways from this year’s report:

1. finding lower carbon solutions

We’re working to lower the carbon intensity of our business and meet a growing world’s need for energy. This begins with our aim to make our oil and natural gas production among the most efficient and responsibly produced in the world.

Some highlights of our efforts include:

  • Our U.S. methane intensity for upstream production—a key focus area for reducing global warming—was 64% lower than the U.S. upstream production sector average.
  • In collaboration with Svante and the U.S. Department of Energy National Energy and Technology Laboratory, we are piloting technology that captures CO2 from our Kern River facility in San Joaquin Valley, California.
  • We became the second largest producer of renewable diesel and biodiesel in the United States with acquisition of Renewable Energy Group, Inc.

2. protecting the environment

Chevron’s environmental strategy underscores our commitment to protect the environment. Our efforts include responsible water use and a focus on biodiversity, especially in ecologically sensitive areas where we operate.

We use technology to help us in these efforts:

  • In the Permian Basin, we're working with Aris Water Solutions to improve our ability to efficiently recycle our produced water. In 2022, 99% of water demands for well completions in the Permian were met using brackish or recycled water.
  • We are creating a global geospatial database of our upstream onshore operations overlaid with data on protected areas. This allows us to screen operating sites and potential new projects. It also allows us to identify potential biodiversity impacts and benefits at the site level.

3. empowering people

We put people at the heart of our business by working to create a culture of inclusion and belonging, build a diverse workforce, and give back to our communities.

Our U.S.-based Humankind program is a way for employees, retirees and contractors to support their communities. One example is the effort Chevron volunteers, including employees from our Richmond, California refinery, made to help clean up and support six local schools that had been vandalized over the summer.

In 2022, through our Humankind program, we:

  • Donated more than $34 million to U.S. nonprofit organizations.
  • Supported more than 1,200 charitable organizations with volunteering.
  • Logged more than 88,700 volunteer hours in the United States.

4. getting results the right way

We seek to foster a culture of integrity and are committed to doing things responsibly. Included in that approach is reporting our performance data each year in the Corporate Sustainability Report. To help the public easily understand our results, we provide a customized chart generator that allows you to examine data from the report.

5. embracing technology

Delivering solutions that scale and transform the global energy system requires new and evolving technologies.

We’re working to develop our own and partner with others so we can help advance a more sustainable and resilient energy system.

For instance, we collaborated with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory to launch the Chevron Studio. This program links entrepreneurs with universities and national laboratories to bring promising technologies that could help deliver a lower carbon future to the market.
