AlwaysFree: China Port Congestion Worsens Amid Strict Anti COVID-19 Measures

Author: SSESSMENTS

Ships are diverted from Ningbo, the world’s third-busiest container port, which is partially suspended after a worker was tested positive for the disease. While other parts of Ningbo are still in operation, cargo processing was slowed significantly due to stringent quarantine and disinfection measures. As a result, congestion is spilling over to nearby ports such as Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Ship-tracking data showed more than 50 container vessels were queuing at Ningbo port, on August 17, up from 28 on August 10 when a COVID-19 case was detected at its Meshian terminal. In Shanghai port, 34 vessels were waiting at anchorage, rising from 27 over the same period, while in Xiamen, 700 kilometers south of Ningbo, the queue rose from four to 18.

However, Ningbo Zhoushan Port Co stated on Monday that it had restored handling volume to about 90% of its average daily level last month. The port said it had taken steps to mitigate the impact of the Meshian terminal shutdown, which makes up around a fifth of Ningbo’s container handling capacity.
