Covestro AG accepted the first renewable phenol delivery from Borealis Group AG.
The 1,000 tons package of renewable phenol was manufactured using renewable hydrocarbons from Neste Corp., which is certified by International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC). Borealis then converted the hydrocarbons into ISCC Plus mass balance certified phenol and Covestro will produce the high-performance plastic polycarbonate, replacing the part of phenol normally manufactured from purely fossil resources.
Covestro´s CEO Dr. Markus Steilemann commented, “We are recycling carbon and are driving the circularity forward, which must become the new global guiding principle.”
The company aims to support major industries, including the automotive and electronics industries, to achieve greater sustainability and decrease their dependence on materials from fossil resources.
Covestro and partners are taking measures to prop up the transformation to a circular economy and become fully circular itself.
