According to the company’s website media release on October 3, 2022, Gazprom is commencing the implementation of the construction (reconstruction) project for the Nadym – Pangody railroad section, which will form part of the planned Northern Latitudinal Railway.
The Northern Latitudinal Railway (NLR) has strategic importance for the development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. It will establish direct communications between the Severnaya and Sverdlovskaya railroads along the Obskaya – Salekhard – Nadym – Pangody – Novy Urengoy – Korotchaevo route in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area (YaNAA). The NLR will run for a total of about 700 kilometers.
In order to carry out construction and installation works on the Nadym – Pangody section (109 kilometers in length) which falls under the purview of Gazprom, a general contractor agreement was signed. In line with the document, the existing railroad infrastructure (including the roadbed, bridge crossings, energy and transport facilities, and communications) will undergo reconstruction and enhancement to meet the required technical parameters.
Gazprom plans to use the new transport route in the YaNAA to deliver hydrocarbon products from the Company's fields in the region, as well as to bring cargo and personnel to the YaNAA.
Background
In December 2019, Gazprom and the Federal Agency for Rail Transport (Roszheldor) signed the Coordination Agreement to cooperate on the project for the creation of the Northern Latitudinal Railway.
Russian Railroads jointly with NLR LLC intends to provide for, inter alia, the construction of the Obskaya – Salekhard – Nadym section, reconstruction of the Pangody – Novy Urengoy – Korotchaevo section, and construction of the railway parts of the bridges over the Ob and Nadym Rivers.
Gazprom will bring the Nadym – Pangody railroad line into operation. A special-purpose subsidiary, Gazprom Perevozki Nadym, was established for the project.
In May 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued an instruction to commence the works on the construction of the Northern Latitudinal Railway in the current year within every section of the construction project.
