AlwaysFree: Indonesia’s Pertamina Signs MoU On Carbon, Hydrogen Projects With ExxonMobil

Author: SSESSMENTS

Indonesia’s state-owned energy company Pertamina and ExxonMobil on Tuesday inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to study the potential for large-scale deployment of technologies such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage, and low-carbon hydrogen. The two firms will jointly identify geologic formations deep underground that could be suitable for safe CO2 storage and safe, commercially-viable CO2 utilisation. The partnership will also include a feasibility study of transporting CO2 in Southeast Asia, with collaboration expected to involve research and development studies with universities.

ExxonMobil set up its Low Carbon Solutions business to commercialise low-emission technologies. It focuses on the process of capturing CO2 from industrial activity and injecting it into deep underground geologic formations for safe, secure, and permanent storage. The division is also pursuing strategic investments in biofuels and hydrogen for hard-to-decarbonise sectors. Joe Blommaert, the president of ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions, said the company is looking for opportunities in Indonesia and throughout Southeast Asia that can help governments achieve game-changing emissions reductions.
