AlwaysFree: Italy’s Snam Aims At Reaching Carbon Neutrality By 2040

Author: SSESSMENTS

Italian gas pipeline company Snam aims at reaching carbon neutrality by 2040. Europe’s biggest gas pipeline operator also said it would invest in the transition to cleaner energy sources and a project to prepare its network for hydrogen transmission. The company on Wednesday outlined its €7.4 billion ($) investment plan until 2024. Snam will direct about half of the planned investment to get its infrastructure ready to receive hydrogen.

Snam said the carbon neutrality target did not cover Scope 3 emissions, generated by end clients when using the energy it provided. However, the company noted that it would cooperate with suppliers to address these emissions. Snam said it aimed at cutting 50% of its direct and indirect carbon emissions by 2030.

Snam has a target to transport fully decarbonised gas in its system by 2050. The company successfully conducted a pilot study when it achieved a hydrogen blend of 10% in its pipeline. It is keen to develop hydrogen transmission in its pipeline and make Italy a hydrogen hub in Europe.
