AlwaysFree: Japanese Player Advances Thailand's LNG Import Plans

• Grassroots receiving and regas project planned at Map Ta Phut

According to Upstream’s article published on November 11, 2022, Japan’s Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions (TGES) has won further work for a proposed grassroots liquefied natural gas import project in Thailand.

The contractor has been tasked by Gulf MTP LNG Terminal Company (GMTP), a 70:30 joint venture between Gulf Energy and PTT Tank Terminal Company, to advance its planned LNG receiving and regasification facility at Map Ta Phut on Thailand’s eastern seaboard.

When GMTP was formed in October 2019, the JV envisaged investing a total of 40.9 billion baht (US$1.13 billion in today’s terms) including land reclamation and the construction of an LNG terminal with phase one capacity of not less than 5 million tonnes per annum.

TGES will now update its basic engineering work for the project, which it was awarded in August 2020, and also be involved as a consultant in the evaluation of the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract. Further details of the workscope and the contract value were not divulged.

The Japanese contractor has already worked on two of PTT’s LNG import projects in Thailand – the phase two expansion of its existing Map Ta Phut terminal and the Thai company’s nearby 7.5 million tpa Nong Fab facility, which is targeting commercial operations by year-end.
