Record cargo imports are causing container congestion at the Port of Los Angeles, America’s busiest seaport which handles trade with China. Total volumes at the port jumped 27% year-on-year to 980,729 TEUs in October, with loaded imports surging 29%. At the nearby Port of Long Beach, authorities are transporting some containers to a staging area to ease the congestion.
During the import surge, a container spent an average of 5 days on port property, doubling the usual dwelling time. The wait time for storage space also doubled to 7.1 days. Finding containers inside port terminals also took a longer time, which raised truck turn times. Some importers also reported a shortage of trucks that move goods from the ports to destinations across the country.
US imports typically peak ahead of the year-end holiday season. However, this year, the peak is exaggerated as retailers and manufacturers are scrambling to restock their depleted warehouses. The COVID-19 pandemic also creates a higher demand for some goods such as personal protective gear and patio furniture.
