AlwaysFree: Vietnam To Start LNG Imports In 2022 To Lower Emissions: Minister

Author: SSESSMENTS

Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Hong Dien, said that the country would start importing LNG in 2022 as part of its efforts to ensure energy security and lower emissions. Dien added that Vietnam’s LNG imports would grow to 5 million tons by 2025, 10 million tons by 2030, and 15 million tons by 2035. He noted that Vietnam is working on building infrastructure which will enable LNG imports.

The Vietnamese government has approved the Son My LNG project, the country’s largest LNG to power project. Dien said that the government is also examining many other projects proposed by international firms. He added that LNG would be one of the most important solutions to ensure Vietnam’s energy security amid robust economic growth and depleting domestic coal, oil, and gas output.

Vietnam has also set a target to boost the development of domestic renewable and sustainable energy resources. This will go hand in hand with the country’s emission reduction plan. The Southeast Asian country intends to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 9% or 83.9 million tons of CO2 equivalent by the end of the decade. The energy sector is expected to contribute to 61.4% of the total reduction of around 51.5 million tons of CO2 equivalent. Meanwhile, the remaining reduction is expected to come from other sectors such as land-use changes and forestry (9.3 million tons), waste treatment (9.1 million tons), manufacturing (7.2 million tons), and agriculture (6.8 million tons).
