AnalysisSSESSMENTS: Malaysia PP Homopolymer Exports As Of February 2021 versus the same period of 2020 Reported by Malaysia

  • Malaysia PP homopolymer exports to China in Jan-Feb 2021 decreased by five-digits compared to Jan-Feb 2020
  • Malaysia PP homopolymer exports to the Philippines increased by more than 1,000 tons  in Jan-Feb 2021 compared to Jan-Feb 2020

According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the total exports of PP homopolymer from Malaysia in January to February 2021 was 63,540 tons, which has slumped by 113,109 tons compared to the same period in 2020. In February 2021, the total export of PP homopolymer from Malaysia dropped by 3,548 tons compared to January 2021. Likewise, in comparison to February last year, the export volume of PP homopolymer from the country in February 2021 has declined by 5,449 tons.

In January to February 2020, the top 5 export destinations of PP homopolymer from Malaysia were Vatican City (76,329 tons), China (38,924 tons), Indonesia (25,986 tons), Vietnam (17,433 tons), and Hong Kong (5,799 tons). 

Meanwhile, during the same period in 2021, China (18,835 tons), Indonesia (18,416 tons), and Vietnam (14,386 tons) moved up to the first, second, and third positions of top export markets of PP homopolymer from Malaysia, respectively. Furthermore, the Philippines (3,715 tons) took a spot as the fourth top export market of Malaysia PP homopolymer, followed by Myanmar (2,271 tons) as the fifth on the list. 

In the first two months of 2021, all of the top 5 export destinations of PP homopolymer from Malaysia showed a downward movement in their quantities, with the Philippines as an exception. The biggest reduction in PP homopolymer export quantities from Malaysia in January to February 2021 was reported to China, in which its quantities have slipped by 20,089 tons. On the other hand, PP homopolymer exports from Malaysia to the Philippines have hiked by 1,190 tons during the same period in 2021. All changes were compared to the same period in the previous year.

Malaysia ports are widely used as Bonded Warehouse for transit cargoes to Asia. SSESSMENTS do not find the statistics data provided by Malaysia to be fully accurate and exports and re-exports are not well separated.
