Plenty price movement recorded in local and import market
Market players on a wait-and-see stance after Eid Al-Fitr holiday
Outlook would be great in early of the month before conundrum descending

Market awash with anticipation of “new normal” after Eid Al-Fitr holiday. Price list for PP Homopolymer grades from the leading Indonesian polyolefins producer edged down between IDR150,000-160,000/ton ($10/ton) on the week commencing May 4 before bouncing up by IDR360,000/ton ($24/ton) for PP Homo Film and IDR260,000/ton ($17/ton) for PP Homo Raffia, while PP Random Copolymer Injection moved up between IDR150,000-160,000/ton ($10/ton) on the week commencing May 11. SSESSMENTS.COM’s data showed that the price list for PP Homopolymer and Copolymer grades from the leading Indonesian polyolefins producer surfaced with an upward adjustment of between IDR150,000-300,000/ton ($10-20/ton) on the week starting May 18. After Eid Al-Fitr holiday, the producer’s price list surfaced with an increase of between IDR180,000-200,000/ton ($12-13/ton) for PP Homopolymer grades and IDR200,000/ton ($13/ton) PP Random Copolymer Injection, all on a weekly comparison. From traders’ side, some converters received offers for localized Southeast Asian PP Homo Raffia cargoes with a IDR200,000/ton ($13/ton) reduction on the week commencing May 4. The traders’ offers then moved up between IDR100,000-200,000/ton ($6-13/ton) on week-on-week comparison in line with the local producer’s price list on week starting May 11, before recording gains by another IDR500,000/ton ($34/ton) on week beginning May 18. In the week commencing May 25 and coincided with Eid Al-Fitr holiday, traders reported that the market was running flat as only a few of the converters purchased some cargoes that will be shipped in early June.

Speaking of the import market, the cloudy mood settling in with customers pointed out to SSESSMENTS.COM that offers were not workable. Offers for PP Homo Raffia of Middle East origin on week commencing May 4 were available at $820/ton while PP Homo Film from the same region were available at $765/ton. Middle East origin PP cargoes then set up at $830/ton on the week commencing May 11. However, buyers showed a cold response citing the workable level should be between $740-745/ton on LC at sight, CIF Indonesia Main Port basis. The same sentiment persisted and there were no new offers at the end of April due to Eid Al-Fitr holiday. The latest offers for Middle Eastern PP Homo Raffia cargoes were at $840/ton on LC at sight, CIF Indonesia Main Port basis on May 19.

Market players contacted by SSESSMENTS.COM said overall end-product sales declined on an annual comparison due to the Coronavirus pandemic. While converters run their factories, production limitations due to low orders plus large-scale social restrictions make inventory absorption decrease. As a result, converters as customers decided to postpone procurement activities until June or after the Eid Al-Fitr holiday. On the supply news, Pertamina reportedly experienced an unplanned shutdown at its 45,000 tons/year PP plant on April 27 and resumed their production on the week commencing May 4. Apart from that, there was no supply bottleneck reported in May.

With Eid Al-Fitr holiday ending and, albeit slowly, society activity returning, estimation comes from market players that end-product demand will rise slightly. The market then underwent a little rebound with offers afterwards dependent on the government's fruition to implement the "new normal" procedures in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic. Even so, orders for raw materials are said to not improve until mid-June from the outlook shared by market players with SSESSMENTS.COM.
